NEWSPAPERS CREATE PUBLIC NOTICES WEB SITE

South Dakota’s weekly and daily newspapers have created a free, text-searchable Web site that includes thousands of government public notices from across the state.

The site - www.sdpublicnotices.com -- is a database of public notices such as the minutes of school boards, city councils and county commissions. Once the public notices are published in the local newspaper, they are uploaded to the Web site where viewers can search by keywords, county, city or newspaper.

This is the first statewide comprehensive database of all legal notices published in South Dakota. Anyone in South Dakota or anywhere in the world can simply go to www.sdpublicnotices.com and search for any public notice for any city, county, school district or other public boards. This is the first time a comprehensive “open to anyone” database of its kind has been made available to the public, at no additional cost to government.

“You can’t replace the value and importance of having government public notices published first in the local community newspaper that is read widely by the residents of that community,” said SDNA President Mark Roby, publisher of the Watertown Public Opinion. “However, this Web site extends that reach and is just another example of how strongly South Dakota’s newspapers are committed to protecting and enhancing the public’s right to know in South Dakota.”

SDNA General Manager David Bordewyk added: “South Dakota’s weekly and daily newspapers have joined forces to provide this public service at no charge to
the taxpayers of the state. Public notices are vital to strong open government and this Web site gives a boost to open government in South Dakota.”

South Dakota Newspaper Association, based in Brookings, represents the state‘s 136 weekly and daily newspapers, with various programs and services, including public policy advocacy, advertising sales and placement and professional development.
